His talents as a resourceful cinematographer were put to full test on The Wonderland Experience shot in India, when he had to watch his truckload of lighting equipment and electricians from Bombay, disappear into the dust. The producer had refused to pay the extortionate rates that were only made apparent on arrival of the equipment. Richard then had to film the entire picture using only reflected light made from silk sheets sewn together to form 12 x 12 reflectors, along with painted white wooden boards and mirrors. Luckily he had brought some rolls of reflective material with him.

Richard was camera operator as well as director of photography, and after every shot he had to run around the set in searing temperatures, adjusting the human lighting stands for the best results. After the highly exhausting yet enjoyable 7 weeks shoot, the team turned up at Technicolor labs with the entire movie in their arms, ready for processing. Being a low budget film, they couldn't afford to courier any of the rushes from India to London, and had to have faith in the camera department's vigilance in spotting any scratches, hairs or soft focus shots.
